Weight Loss Medication and Surgery: The Mindset Shifts to Embrace Treatment

In today's episode, I'm gonna walk you through some key mindset shifts that can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. We'll chat about the important question of when it might make sense to think about medication or surgery for managing weight. And of course, we'll toss around a few strategies to tackle those mindset hurdles that can sometimes get in the way of finding safe and effective treatments.

My Journey of Mindset Shifts

Let me share a recent personal experience that marked a significant mindset shift for me. Just about a month ago, I was wrestling with creating friendship bracelets, attempting to capture that Taylor Swift-style charm. Those tiny clay beads proved to be quite the challenge, and my eyes were taking the brunt of it. Frustration crept in as I struggled to thread those minuscule beads onto the string, testing my patience. It was then that a simple realization dawned on me – what if reading glasses could be my magic wand in this situation?

I fetched a pair of reading glasses, and it was like a revelation. Suddenly, the task of putting those tiny beads on the string became infinitely easier. Not stopping there, I glanced at my iPhone, and even reading the text on the screen was smoother. A $10 purchase turned into a magic wand, making me wonder why I hadn't used this tool sooner.

Then I recalled a significant turning point a few years back when I opted for surgery to correct my vision. Before, my eyesight was terribly poor. I could barely see the giant "E" at the top of the eye chart without getting uncomfortably close. Glasses and contacts were my constant companions, limiting my activities and causing constant discomfort.

The decision to undergo surgery wasn't covered by insurance, but it turned out to be a life-changing investment. Not only did it eliminate the nuisance of glasses and contacts, but it also opened up a world of experiences.

After undergoing the surgery, a trip to Hawaii with my family took on a whole new meaning. Before the procedure, my beach experience was limited to sitting at a restaurant, wistfully staring at the ocean from a distance. The struggle was real – sand in my eyes causing irritation, and the constant risk of water slipping my contacts off prevented me from fully enjoying the beach.

Post-surgery, Hawaii became an absolute delight. I immersed myself in the ocean, relished the pool, and uncovered a newfound love for the beach. The transformation was astounding, turning what was once a distant view into a hands-on, immersive experience.

Surprisingly, a year and a half later, I found myself surfing in Hawaii. This was unimaginable before the surgery, as wearing glasses or contacts in the water was a recipe for disaster. The sheer thrill of trying out such an adventurous and seemingly unattainable activity was an unexpected bonus.

Drawing this back to the realm of weight management, I see parallels. Just as eye surgery was a game-changer for me, finding the right intervention for weight issues could be transformative. Whether it's medication or surgery, the key is to recognize when something is affecting us and be open to the possibility of the right tool. Just like my eye surgery unexpectedly broadened my horizons, the right intervention for weight management could be the transformative "magic wand" many individuals are seeking.

Inspiring Paths to Weight Wellness

I'd like to share a few inspirational journeys from individuals I've worked with, offering insights for those considering weight intervention. Please note that the names used here are changed for ethical considerations and do not represent the actual names of people I've worked with.

1. Aaron's Journey with Medication and Weight Loss

Aaron, approaching 50 and dealing with injuries, found himself on a frustrating weight roller coaster despite previous  success with the keto diet and exercise. As his weight surged back, so did health issues—rising blood pressure, recurring gout, and missed family vacation opportunities due to weight restrictions.

Various medications brought minimal relief until he discovered Zepbound, leading to an impressive 80-pound weight loss in a year. This success allowed him to revamp his exercise routine, ditch those blood pressure and gout medications, and feel fantastic. Now under 250 pounds, he enjoyed newfound freedom on family outings.

This story prompts a crucial question: What if Aaron hadn't tried medication? The potential scenario involves a gradual weight increase, the addition of more medications, and a worsening health trajectory. In the realm of medicine, breaking the cycle of metabolic issues, such as prediabetes, diabetes, high blood pressure, and gout, can be challenging solely with lifestyle changes.

While lifestyle modifications are encouraged as a primary approach, Aaron's experience highlights the significance of considering medications when diet and exercise alone fall short. It's a reminder that the right intervention, like the medication Zepbound, can be a game-changer.

2. How Bariatric Transformation Liberated Maggie from Diabetes and Obesity

At the age of 35, Maggie was confronted with the impending threat of type 2 diabetes—a familial concern that heightened her anxieties about future health challenges and the ability to keep pace with her children. Seeing her family struggle, she knew what she would struggle with in the future. Opting for metabolic surgery to address her weight and diabetes issues, she underwent a remarkable transformation. The surgery not only successfully treated her diabetes but also facilitated weight loss, allowing her to stay active and involved with her family.

However, the significant weight loss did leave Maggie with excess skin around her stomach, prompting her to invest in corrective surgery. Fortunately, her insurance covered most of the procedure, enhancing her comfort and well-being. Today, Maggie no longer battles obesity, effortlessly keeping pace with her kids during day-long Disneyland adventures and feeling confident among fellow moms at school.

This story underscores the close ties between genetics and health; despite her relatively young age, Maggie's strong family history of diabetes posed a significant risk. Through surgery, she found a long-term solution to her diabetes, freeing her from daily medication and allowing her to live a vibrant life. Maggie's journey is a testament to the transformative power of intervention, giving her the freedom to embrace a lifestyle befitting a regular 35-year-old, despite the challenges her body initially presented.

3. Sylvia's Triumph Over Diabetes and Binge Eating

Sylvia, around 50 years old, grappled with both diabetes and binge eating disorder. After trying various medications with limited success, she began using Mounjaro, a medication used to treat diabetes containing the same main ingredient as Zepbound.

The impact was profound – her relationship with food underwent a remarkable transformation.

No longer feeling consumed by the urge to binge, Sylvia found herself effortlessly being able to follow nutrition advice. Following the meal plan, incorporating three balanced meals a day, prioritizing protein, and engaging in recommended exercises became routine. Shedding 60 to 70 pounds opened up new possibilities, and she even took up running for the first time in her life.

Now, at 50, Sylvia joyfully runs two to three miles daily, a testament to the newfound vigor and freedom from diabetes reflected in her blood work. Her life has undergone a remarkable transformation, showcasing the power of personalized intervention in reclaiming health and well-being. Plus an improved relationship with food and her own body.

Investing in Your Health as a Worthwhile Commitment

I’d like to share another personal journey, hoping to inspire people with the belief that dedicating resources to your health is a valuable investment. About a year ago, I faced a dental dilemma when two of my back teeth decided to part ways. While the decision to have them removed was non-negotiable, the next steps were within my control. I could choose to go without those teeth, consider a bridge (with its own drawbacks), or invest in dental implants—a pricier but more durable option, costing around $20,000 to $25,000.

This whole teeth saga got me thinking about how we spend our money. I mean, dropping a serious chunk on dental implants made me wonder about the sweet vacation or the dream home makeover I could've had instead. But then, I started picturing myself struggling to chew and my teeth deciding to throw an unwanted party in my mouth, and suddenly, those implants seemed like a pretty wise investment.

I get it, we all manage our money our own way. But seriously, your health is the real deal. It's more than just teeth or some weight loss pills; it's about putting yourself first. Whether it's your smile, medications, or whatever keeps you going, find what works.

Take a moment to consider prioritizing intervention for weight management. It can trigger a domino effect of positivity. Fewer cravings mean you won't overindulge, and hey, that energy boost might turn morning workouts or evening strolls into a breeze. And the perks extend beyond the scale – better heart health, improved sleep, and a lower risk of diseases. Investing in weight management is more a number on a scale; it's a game-changer for your well-being.
