How To Keep Your Health While Traveling With A Before, During, And After Plan For Travel, Ep #007

Today we are going to talk about how to take care of your health while you travel. I'm going to help you come up with a plan for before, during, and after your trips so that you can stay on plan and not undo all the work you have done with lifestyle changes just because you are traveling. If you are like my patients, one of the biggest challenges that can throw you off track is when you have a trip, vacation, or some other type of travel. Whether this is a once-a-year or once every few years, a blowout trip of a lifetime or a regular trip home to see your family, or even business trips that you have to do on a regular basis, if you do not plan for how you're going to handle travel, it is very likely you're going to get thrown off track. So let's come up with a plan for what you can do before, during, and after travel so that you can maintain your weight or even keep losing weight while you’re on the go.

Points of interest...

  • Planning for your travels ahead of time [2:02]

  • Packing to be successful [5:14]

  • Coming back without going backward [7:47]

  • Enjoying food with the right mindset [10:10]

  • Alcohol brings friends [13:21]

  • Getting back to normal when you get home [18:47]

  • What to do with today’s information? [24:05]

Get your mind right and enjoy every bite

Food can be a big challenge when traveling, and many of us enjoy trying new things when we travel. I certainly do. One of my favorite things about traveling is exploring new foods and trying new things. Therefore, one of the things that can be the most helpful in enjoying food while you travel, without feeling crummy or gaining weight, is keeping a mindset of moderation.

When a certain food is special, we want to eat all of it. If you think about it though, and a lot of my patients agree, the first bite of something you have is usually the best bite. You're like, oh my gosh, this is like the best dessert ever. Then you take a second bite, and you're like, oh, this is really good. Then at some point, it's still good, but it's not lighting up your brain the way that it did with those first few bites. So if you're eating mindfully, if you're really paying attention to your food, then you can stop before it gets to that point where you're just eating something for the sake of eating it or finishing everything on your plate.

Homework: What to do with what you’ve learned?

The take home for today's podcast is that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If you just go into your trip with an old mindset of woohoo party time, gonna do whatever I want, you probably are not going to feel great when you come back and you probably aren’t going to reach your goals around your weight. Have some intention going into your trip.

You don't have to restrict yourself and not have any fun but plan to stay active. Plan to have a good mindset, this is about balance and moderation, and health. Watch the alcohol it brings friends and not always the type that you want. Plan to stay active and don't be afraid to pack and bring the things you need to be successful, whatever those may be. I know people who bring blenders with them so they can make their protein shake. I know people who have brought little waffle makers with them so that they can cook the things that they need. Just plan for success and pack what you need to keep things as normal as possible for yourself while you're still having fun.
